Super R-Type

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by David Guzmn This is an early game. Made in 1991, Super R-Type managed to succeed in both graphics, music, and gameplay. In simpler words, this space shoot-em-up is awesome!

Graphics 9 out of 10

One of the biggest elements in this space shooter is graphics. You can tell that the people at IREM (The company that made the game) are very creative. Great sprites. The explosions are very realistic and eye-popping. And the moment of happiness is when your tiny ship whips out the big guns! I guess if fireworks are banned in you area, on the 4th of July you can play this game, get power-ups, and kill some enemies! What a show. Big or small, the bosses are all special, just because of the care and detail it took to design and illustrate them!

Music and Sound 10 out of 10

The next biggest part of Super R-Type is music. It's the best music I've heard from any Super NES game, period. I mean, when is there a time in which you're dying to rent or buy this game just to go to the sound test menu and crank it up? Everyone who has played this game knows what I mean. It seems there are either tons of sound samples they used, or they just had a life-like sound sequencer. Highlights are BGM 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Oh never mind! Those are all the stages!! ;-) It helps to have slamming music while you play; it gets you very motivated. The sound effects are fair, maybe they could have took a little more care in making them. But with the music, who the heck cares?!

Game Challenge 7 out of 10

I'm not real sure on what to say about this. The game gives you a choice of NOVICE, EASY, NORMAL, and HARD. If you aren't really great at the game (like me) NOVICE is a bit easy (You keep all your guns after you die, and the baddies play it safe). But it's good for practice. EASY and NORMAL are almost the same, but HARD is almost impossible. It almost goes to the point where it's more frustrating than fun, since all the enemies ambush you with giant spews of bullets, or fire, or whatever you call it.

Game Play-Fun 8 out of 10

The first 10 or so times you beat it, it's real fun. It's kind of cool to dim the lights and engage yourself in an intergalactic space battle, with awesome explosions and slamming music. But like many other games, once you beat it enough times, it's not as exciting. But that's what the sound test menu's for, dude!

Frustration

The biggest frustration in Super R-Type is when you do a boo-boo. You slam into a wall, a stray bullet happens to find its way toward you, or you go full-throttle into "la-la land" and you collide with an enemy. This means you have to start all over again, at the beginning of the stage, however long it is! You can go into fierce bouts when you die, like smashing the game or banging your head against the wall (or worst of all: turning the game off!!). So BEWARE!

Overall 9 out of 10

Overall, it's a good little game. Go out and get it. It's a classic!
