Star Trek: Star Fleet Academy

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by Lord Nazerous Ok, all you Star Trek fans out there. If you're a fan of the original series and ships, you'll LOVE this game. Even if you're not a fan of Star Trek, this is an excellent simulator, shooter, and scenario game.

Graphics 8 out of 10

All of the ships are a 3-D polygonal interpretation of their original design. Stars and ships appear in the middle of the screen (the ship's view screen) while the surrounding graphics are just ordimental. The people and computers bordering the view screen aren't the greatest graphics...but they could be worst. (And besides, they add to the feel of a star ship bridge.)

Music and Sound 7 out of 10

There isn't much variety in the way of music. I'd be surprised if there were five tracks in the entire game. Don't get me wrong, though, they're not annoying, I just think that Interplay (designer) could have done a bit more. Sound effects are great. Everything from the phaser fire, to the beep of the computer buttons, is a good depiction of the original Star Trek. The only thing that isn't "up to par" is the sound of the warp drive, where it's neat sounding, it's not the sound of the original Star Trek warp engines. (For all you non-trekers out there: The Warp Drive is the Engine of a Star Ship that can reach above light speeds).

Game Challenge Var out of 10

Var= Variable. You can change difficulty from Average to Very Hard. The opening scenario is pathetically easy. Navigate between each bouy. The last, mostly impossible. It all depends son what you do any what you want. Desisions that are made effect your Grade (YES this is a simulator.). Should you run or fight. Destroy or diplomize? Every decision has an effect.

Game Play-Fun 9 out of 10

The scenarios in the regular rarely ever get boring or un-imaginative. Each mission is different, from the previous. Control is simple, yet intricate enough to make it a fun ride. There's even a simulator, apart from the regular game. You can choose what ships you fight as, and against. (There's even some codes that let you get new and different ships on this site*) Two player mode lets you shoot it out with another player in split screen action. Also in the simulator there are some famous encounters (wrath of khan, undiscovered country..ect.) *Codes on this site are NOT done by me, but I do recommend them for any one who has this game. I commend Michael Brown for writing and sending in these wonderful codes.

Frustration

My only frustration with this game is the lack of a save feature. Yes there are passwords but they're not very fun write down every scenario, or input for that matter.

Replayability 10 out of 10

You'll always be coming back to this game for more battles. Change the difficulties, opponents, you'll always find a challenge (or lack of challenge if you wish.) Go against a Klingon Bird of Prey,, in a tiny Romulan Scout Ship, or better yet, throw in two or three birds of prey. You'll get your money's worth out of this masterpiece.

Game Value 10 out of 10

I bought mine used (box manual) , mainly because it's no longer sold new. I paid $9 bucks! Yep, that's right, an excellent price. But would have paid up to $45, and maybe even $55, for this jewel. So no matter how much you find it for, it'll probably be worth the money.

Overall 9 out of 10

Excellent game. One of the best SNES games out there. The graphics are good along with the sound, but best of all the game play. Fun as a single player or two player, snatch this one up before it's gone.
