Super Mario World

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by Phil Ward Bowser is at it again. He has kidnapped the Princess Toadstool and Mario has to save her again. This time he has some aid, however, in the form of the Dinosaur Yoshi who he frees from a dinosaur egg. Mario can use a flower (gives him firepower), a feather (ability to fly) and Yoshi, who can eat things and spit back out turtle shells in different ways. He must battle through the lands to Bowser, defeating one of Bowser's seven children after every land. There are many secrets to be found, so be alert!

Graphics 7 out of 10

The graphics are quite good for the SNES, especially considering that Super Mario World was one of the first games out. They could have been better, but they weren't disappointing, sticking with the true Mario style.

Music and Sound 7 out of 10

Not bad. Traditional-type music for Mario, giving the game a sense of familiarity. Sound is a lot better than the NES.

Game Challenge 10 out of 10

Very challenging game. Not so hard to beat, especially if the star road is found, but very difficult to completely master. It took me over a year to find all the secret worlds and beat all 96. It takes wits, a sharp eye and skill to find some of the secrets.

Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10

Mario at his best! Following in the tradition of Super Mario Bros. 3, the gameplay is very fun and extremely addictive. With more worlds, more allies and special powers, exploring the worlds of Super Mario World can be exciting and fun. Ideal for 2-player games as well. The game features old enemies and new, with new challenges and puzzles, yet still seeming familiar to Mario players. Definitely bare sport!

Frustration

There is some frustration, though most of mine stemmed from the fact that my files were constantly being deleted. The game itself is great and usually frustration-free, except for the natural frustration you would feel at not being able to beat a hard world.

Replayability 10 out of 10

I could play this game for years. Although the game can be beaten after only finishing 20-30 levels, due to the star road, it is a tremendous challenge to find all of the secrets. There is a total of 96 worlds in the game, and some of these are very hard to find. Even though I've found all of them, playing the game, especially with someone else, is still a pleasure. This game can last for a REALLY long time.

Game Value 9.5 out of 10

Super NES games aren't so expensive anymore, and you should be able to get a new game for under $20 US., not to mention second-hand games. I would definitely say that it is worth the money. However, if you are more into fighting games, and do not like other Mario games, like Mario 3, then this may not be the best buy for you. For Mario-lovers, however, its definitely worth it, and it lasts too.

Overall 9.5 out of 10

Great game. Fun, addictive and filled with secrets that will probably never all be found. Excellent game play and lastability, and pretty good graphics and sound for the SNES too. Nuff respect.
