Super Mario RPG

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by SizzleSword Super Mario RPG was one of the last games by SquareSoft to be released on a Nintendo system, and boy did they make it a doozy. Super Mario RPG is like a mix between any Mario game, and Final Fantasy. One difference is that you can see your enemies before they attack, so you can plan out a way to get by them and such. Another new feature is that you can actually jump onto platforms and related things. Those are some of the many things that make Super Mario RPG so special.

Graphics 12 out of 10

The graphics in Super Mario RPG are easily some of the best graphics on the Super Nintendo. They actually seem 3-D, not flat like Mode 7 graphics. There really isn't much more to say about the graphics; they're just simply astonishing.

Music and Sound 10 out of 10

Super Mario RPG has some really great music. You'll probably been humming the themes of this game in your head for weeks. They have many of the themes from the original Mario games, and even have a Final Fantasy 2 Boss Battle midi thrown in (since it was made by SquareSoft) on the Culex Battle. Most of the themes are goofy, though some of them are slow and gloomy.

Game Challenge 5 out of 10

Super Mario RPG is a beginners RPG. Don't get me wrong, an expert RPGer will play this game for at least a week (unless you're REALLY good). Most of the bosses are fairly simple, and once you find a spell that beats them, they are hard anymore. The only time that you'll die in this game is if you fight a group of enemies or a boss at a really low level. Other than that, this game's pretty easy.

Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10

Though easy, you'll have tons of fun with this game. There's a lot of side-quests, and mini-games in Super Mario RPG. This game also has lots of humor. Instead of an RPG like Dragon Warrior, this game is up-beat, and it will keep you on your toes. So, this game is defiantly a blast to play.

Frustration

There is NO frustration in this game whatsoever (unless you're trying to fight a boss at a low level, and he whips you continuously, or trying to find treasure boxes).

Replayability 15 out of 10

I've beat this game many times, but I still play it a LOT. Some of the things that will keep you coming back to this game are the treasure chests (there's 39 hidden treasure chests in the game... You have to jump EVERYWHERE to try to find them). Finding Frog Coins will also take you a while to get, and are fun to get at the same time. There's a even a Game Boy that you can buy from a Mushroom Kid in the game, and you can play a mini game on it.

Game Value 10 out of 10

I rented this game many times before I actually bought it. It was around $59.99 when it came out, and I think that that's a fairly reasonable price. When I bought it myself, I only paid $25, so I got a really good deal. If you find this game for anything under $30, you should check it out.

Overall 10 out of 10

Since it is one of the few SquareSoft games on the Super NES, many SquareSoft collectors have this game. Though it isn't the hardest RPG out there, it'll defiantly keep you coming back. If you're an RPG fan, you should really get this game.
