Micro Machines

Reviewed by David Ruocco Games don't get much simpler than Micro Machines, but they also don't often get much better. It's bags of fun. The idea is to race the tiny vehicles around tracks designed on everyday surfaces that kids play on - kitchen tables, pool tables, desks, bathtubs and workbenches. Dodge pens, spilt jam, books and avoid dropping off the table altogether. There is a large range of tiny vehicles to race, including trucks, cars, speed boats, helicopters and tanks, and all handle differently. It's the fast-paced nature of the game that makes it so fun to play. Multi-player games are especially frantic. You can play up to four players sharing just two controls, but this is a little fiddly so the better option is to use a multitap. The action is represented from an overhead view, which means you don't get a lot of time to react to what's coming ahead. The game is made even tougher (and enjoyable) by the fact that the vehicles have no grip on the track and skid and slide all over the place. In one player games, you must successfully finish first or second to advance to the next race. You can choose your opponents, with the smarter ones offering a very difficult challenge. Micro Machines is a little gem. Invite some friends over and you won't be able to stop playing.
