Killer Instinct

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by Punchinello From the moment you hear the opening theme to the moment you pull off your first combo, Killer Instinct captures you. It invades you with a thrill, an urge, a DESIRE to fight and win. The music, the graphics are all there, But once you start a fight, you forget all of these as Rare draws you in to their future. Ultratech's Killer Instinct Tournament. Cinder, Combo, Orchid, Fulgore, Riptor, Jago, Sabrewulf, Thunder, Spinal, Glacius and Eyedol are all there, as you choose your destiny. To fight and win.

Graphics 10 out of 10

Rare has done miracles here. Although they aren't as impressive as the arcade version, without the Full-motion video(FMV), they still make it beautifully done. The characters have more frames then you can shake a stick at. It is all rendered. However a lot of objects get recicled ie; Combo's car, bridge, and backdrops. But it's a fighting game so it all rests on gameplay anyway. Despite that it is still some of the finest graphics on the Super NES. Sometimes you just forget what system it is!

Music and Sound 10 out of 10

Amazing. Some music to my ears. The music is so good, Rare shipped the soundtrack on CD with the game! Techno, rock n' roll, and classical all in one cartridge. Wait until you hear Cinder's theme. As for sound, it's decent. The usual grunts and screams of a fighting game. But it's in the music folks! How much it is! There are even voice samples in some of them! Not only that they suit each character and make your adrenaline rush! Not only that but each combo has a name. And the announcer is energetic and fun. Hearing him yell out Ultra with a echo is amazing and each is original! Awesome, brutal, king and others are a blast to hear!

Game Challenge 10 out of 10

This game is HARD. Combo breakers are frustrating. Some moves are hell to avoid. And being the victim of a Ultra combo (18 to 80 hits) Is damn frustrating. Practice makes perfect, as some of these combos are hell to accomplish.

Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10

You get a ball learning the combo theories. Then excuting them yourself? Wow. But you can also stop from being the victim of a combo by breaking them (Combo-Breaker). When your opponent is almost defeated go for the gold and excute a Ultra (18 to 80 consecutive hits-Unbreakable!)Or, when the screen flashes red do a danger move and excute him! The game play is excellent with high controls.

Frustration

Oh. Sometimes you just yell out "CHEATER!!". As it can get very frustrating. Every opponent is a challenge! Some always block!

Replayability 10 out of 10

You will never be able to execute every single combo, Ultra, Ultimate or finish this baby on the hardest setting! You will be coming back for more all the time!

Game Value 10 out of 10

Full price $80? No. But now that the game has been released in 1995 and it's 1998, you can get it cheap say 20 bucks. (Good luck finding the CD though.)

Overall 100 out of 100

It's the second best fighter on Super NES (Super Street fighter 2 being champion) It's complex fun and defiantly worth renting or buying. If you like fighting games then buy. It's the game that introduced the "real" combos. It's a must in your game library.
