Donkey Kong Country

Reviewed by VGW Man At the beginning of the video game era, there was a game called Donkey Kong. Actually, Donkey was Cranky Kong, who is in the game I am reviewing at this time. Anyway, the game sold well, until Mario, the carpenter (Why a carpenter? I don't know), now a plumber, came in. Donkey Kong was long forgotten. That is, until Rare, with Nintendo, helped recreate Donkey Kong. Now, with it's sequels, it is one of the best games out here.

Graphics 10 out of 10

Now this is a game that was so stunning! I mean, where have you seen graphics like these? No, not including a Nintendo 64? NOWHERE! Using ACM technology, everyone is rendered in 3-D. Also, Cranky looks like a grandpa. He should after starring in the original Donkey Kong. The animals and bad guys look so rendered (& so deadly), I almost felt the pain. Good Job!

Music and Sound 9.5 out of 10

Almost a perfect score, this game has perfect tunes and sound effects. When you get hit, Diddy and Donkey act like they get hit & sound like they need a band-aid. My only problem is that they don't "speak"--I mean, they only make grunts. Hearing Cranky's insults would really help the score.

Game Challenge 9.5 out of 10

This game has a decent challenge. Part of what increases the challenge is the wide variety of hidden areas in the area. What decreases the challenge is the easy controls (see below). Still, a solid game.

Game Play-Fun 10 out of 10

This game has easy controls to learn. Each Kong has the same moves, but the animals have some different controls (not special). Enguarde is the easiest to control because he doesn't need the B button to move around. Some of the easy controls decrease the challenge (see above), but still easy for a five year old to learn.

Frustration

I didn't see any frustration, except when you get far into the game and get killed. Fortunately, you can save at Candy Kong, so that isn't much of a deal.

Replayability 10 out of 10

There are a lot of hidden areas that it should take all year to find and get. That is, if you are NOT using a strategy guide.

Game Value 9.5 out of 10

Only if you don't have enough money will this game not be of any value.

Overall 10 out of 10
