Donkey Kong Country

Reviewed by Ryan Burke Donkey Kong Country was truly one of the best games of its time. This game used a tried-and-true gamestyle. It was a classic 2-d platform game. At first when this game was mentioned we associated it with the classic Donkey Kong. But, that stopped quickly after we played it. When other games at the time featured static sound and graphics that were hard on the eyes, this game was beautiful. Donkey Kong Country was the game that made Rare what it is today. This is truly one of the best 16-bit games ever made.

Graphics 10 out of 10

The graphics were completely stunning. While the characters remained large and detailed, it was the backgrounds that really shined. Every level was so diverse in color that it seemed as if you were really in the game. (at least at the time it did) The snow was another great effect that the production team added in. In the snow levels, the snowflakes looked lifelike. They also slowed you down as the wind pushed them into your face. The water effects was another great characteristic in the game. It made you seem as if you were really under water.

Music and Sound 8 out of 10

The sound was well done in Donkey Kong Country, but it was not revolutionary, like other aspects of the game. It was some of the better sound that you would here on a 16-bit game, but like I said it did not break new ground. The yelling that came from Diddy or Donkey, when they were stuck in a barrel, became especially annoying. Yet the sound while you swam was very realistic.

Game Challenge 9 out of 10

Although this game may have had a cute look, it was very challenging. It will take the average gamer quite a few weeks to complete it all the way through. Where the challenge really comes in is when you have to complete the game at 101%. The only way this is possible is if you find every secret area, and defeat every secret area. I will admit that after beating the game with 60%, I forced myself to buy a strategy guide so I could complete it with the 101%. You have to be a excellent gamer to beat this game with a perfect 101%, WITHOUT using a strategy guide.

Game Value 10 out of 10

This game would have been worth $90 when it was released. It was different from any other game of its time. If I had to make a estimate I would say the game would have sold for $60 at the time. That is a steal for all the hours of fun you will get out of it. I still have my Super Nintendo hooked up just so I can play the 3 Donkey Kong games. All three Donkey Kong games have that special quality about them. they are all easy and fun to pick up, but they will give you a challenge for a long time.

Overall 10 out of 10
