Shingen the Ruler

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by Jackofgames Shingen the Ruler is a NES strategy game set in China [I think the map looks more like Europe to me :)]. Your task is unifying China- which is not an easy thing to do. There are a bunch of rival rulers with the same agenda. And most of the rival rulers are more powerful than you are. You choose the economic decisions of the cities you occupy [with categories being- Yield= crop production, Disaster= Fixed with Flood Control, and more. You have battle with Headquarters [If these die you lose], Infantry [Which can be turned into other units with the Merchant], Lancers, Cavalry [These can move long distances], Archers [Can shoot from a distance], Riflemen [Can shoot from a longer distance than Archers].

Graphics 3 out of 10

This game's graphics are far under par even for the NES. They aren't colorful, and theres not much animation. It doesn't really detract from the play experience though. But if you are only looking for graphics don't buy it you will be disappointed.

Music and Sound 3 out of 10

This music is annoying and monotonous. You will probably turn it down. The sound effects are okay but not that great.

Frustration

There isn't much frustration in this game except for when you see a guy with 255 [max] soldiers in every category and is ranked 50 or something. It is also irritating when gold mines collapse.

Replayability 6.5 out of 10

There is some replayability here. You can try different conquest strategies. But that's about it. I haven't beaten it yet so I don't know about endings.

Game Value 8 out of 10

This game is well worth the value if you buy it at Funcoland. It only costs $.79 there. I got ripped off at K-Mart for $9.99, but I still think it's worth it.

Overall 7.5 out of 10

I like this game and I think you will like it, too if you like Chinese strategy games. It's fun and worth the value.
