Pokemon Yellow

Get the game at Amazon.com!

Reviewed by Sam Pikachu fans rejoice! The newest Pokemon game is here and is selling faster than either of the other two! Just like before you have to become a master trainer by catching all of the Pokemon (little monsters that fight for you) and training them to beat the other Pokemon by having them fight against you. And his time, Pikachu follows you everywhere! But is it really a good game or just a hyped-up sequel? You decide after reading this review!

Graphics 7 out of 10

While the graphics are an improvement over red and blue, Nintendo still isn't making full use of the game boy color, so the graphics are not as good as full color games. One of the most noticeable differences in the games are the graphics. The Pokemon look more like they did in the cartoon and are in full color. The graphics are okay overall, but they could have been better with full color and better battle animation.

Music and Sound 6 out of 10

The music is mostly the same from previous Pokemon games, and is nothing new compared to most games. The sound, on the other hand, is not very good. There sound affects are okay in the battles, but it is strange how the Pokemon make mechanical sounds when they pop up. I would at least expect growling or something. New on yellow are the noises that Pikachu makes. While this can be interesting the first few times, it is a novelty and gets annoying quickly. I tried to solve this by releasing Pikachu, but it won't let you. It is also hard to make out what Pikachu is saying. Overall, the digitized speech from Pikachu is below average and the sound is average Game Boy sound.

Game Challenge 8 out of 10

The game can be very challenging at times, especially when fighting the gym leaders. As in the previous versions, to beat them successfully you have to level up your Pokemon and use the correct types. But one of the biggest challenges is trying not to fall asleep leveling them up! There are some puzzle elements added in the game, but not a lot. More puzzle elements would have made this a much more fun game.

Game Play-Fun 7 out of 10

Few people realize that Pokemon was a new, innovative game before all of the advertising, TV shows, etc. While it can be fun it can get very hard and boring, especially if you don't want to spend a lot of time playing Game Boy. If your expecting a sequel to the previous two Pokemon games you will be disappointed. This is almost exactly like the others in terms of game play. The world map is exactly the same! The main differences are the Pokemon you have to trade for and the gym leader Pokemon, which are much harder to beat. So if you have played red or blue, you will know what to expect. Of course, if you like Pikachu, you will like this game. This game has Pikachu following you everywhere, and you can make it happy by letting it fight and not letting it faint (basically the same thing as dying, but fainting keeps the game E rated). This game is the most fun if you have never played Pokemon before.

Frustration

This game can get extremely frustrating if you are trying to level up Pokemon or beat Gym leaders. It is also frustrating keeping Pikachu happy. In fact, I gave up.

Replayability 9 out of 10

This depends on what you consider Replayability. There is no Replayability in the adventure part of the game(fighting gym leaders and catching Pokemon), but if you like playing multi player Game Boy games, this game is for you. The yellow version also has more modes and unlike many Game Boy games, it will be easy to find someone to play this with since there are so many people who have this game, and even Pokemon clubs to play the game at.

Game Value 5 out of 10

Again, this all depends on different factors. If you have any of the original Pokemon games this is not worth your money, but if you have never played Pokemon or you are a Pikachu fanatic you should buy this game. I gave it a 5 out of 10 because I think Nintendo was being kind of cheap selling basically the same game under a different name.

Overall 7 out of 10

Overall, this as just as good as the other games, and the almost same. Nintendo just made this game to keep the Pokemon craze going until they release the silver and gold versions. Still, if you haven't played the other versions than this might be a good game for you. Just don't expect a completely new game.
