Back in the day, we've encountered great point-n-click games such as Myst and Maniac Mansion. Although I can't guarantee we'll see either of these on DS, I know a game that should hold you over until the game programmers decide to. Trace Memory(Another Code: Dual Memories)is about a 13-year old girl named Ashley Mizuki Robbins, who recieves a strange letter from her thought to be dead father, and the results change Ashley forever. If you've read my review for Lost in Blue, you should already know how i'll be dividing the review. For any newcomers, i'll go over it again. I'll review Story, Graphics, Sound/Music, Controls, and Replay Value.
Story(5/5) As stated above, a 13-year old girl named Ashley Mizuki Robbins, who recieves a strange letter from her thought to be dead father, and a strange machine called a DTS, and the results change Ashley forever(don't you just love cut n' paste?). Along with her Aunt Jessica, they go to Blood Edward Island, the letter's place of origin and supposed location of Ashley's father. Then, Jessica dissapears and Ashley volunteers to go find her. She also meets a ghost named Di, who has amnesia and can't pass on since he has no clues of his past. This is the only side quest in the game, so you must help him for a 100% ending.
Graphics(5/5) Again, this game is top-down, where everything has extravagant detail, as you explore the multi-room complex of the Edward family while looking for Ashley's dad, the mysterious Trace project, and Di's history. In SEARCH MODE, you go into a first person mode of sorts to examine and manipulate objects to solve the Edward's Mysteries and press onwards. Every graphic in the game, from the well-detailed areas to the wonderfully made cut-scenes, is brilliant in the game.
Sound/Music(4/5) Now don't get me wrong, the music fits the mood of an abandoned mansion very well, but having to listen to the same music in each chapter every two minutes gets annoying after a while. But the music is well orchestrated, i'll give it that.
Controls(5/5) You can use two methods of movement in the game, the Control Pad or the Touch Screen. Personally, I use the buttons to navigate and the Touch Screen on the game's many puzzles. So basically, it promotes play for both lefties and righties.
Replay Value(5/5) After beating the game once, you'll be able to try again on a harder difficulty called Star Mode, where some dialouge and text on the DTS cards are changed, along with the puzzles being somewhat harder, and beating it unlocks one extra puzzle that seems to be pointing to a sequel. So Replay Value nets a perfect 5.
In conclusion, wether you konw it as Another or Trace Memory, the game is fun, challenging, and very intresting, form the complex storyline to the drop-dead visuals, you'll love this game time and time again.
