After you defeat Baron K. Roolenstein in Tin Can Valley, it goes through the credits and after it says "The End?", it goes back to the map screen and you can access the Lost World, only if you have all the DK Coins from the first five stages, as well as the Brothers Bear clocks.

After you beat K. Rool in the Lost World, he gives you twelve clocks and asks you if you can beat his times in the Time Trial Mode, then you go to the Time Trial screen.
