After you defeat Julias the mana tree is near death. The tree then appears to the hero and the girl in a human form saying that mana is no longer needed in the world it was originally supposed to help the people but it only caused contention and wars among the people hungry for power. The tree then passes away and the hero and the girl fall in love and live happily ever after.

Out of julias' corpse a new sapling begins to grow.

This way they could still use that little picture of a tree at the end of the game.
