You should be able to use any normal course as a battle mode course.

There should be smarter CPU opponents and more weapons like an ice cloud that freezes everyone in place for a limited amount of time depending on where they are. There should be more courses like inside Peach's castle and an underwater tunnel.

They should have let you drive up to the castle and an option to get off the kart. Then you can run around like Super Mario 64 and enter the castle and stuff.

There would be more items like black shells that attack anyone you wish whether they're behind you or not. I'd also add at least 5 more battle courses like a maze and a mirror course.
